  • Gaining Results In Prevention (GRIP)

    A system-wide intervention program for students who violate certain drug-related policies. Students are referred by local administrators or Student Relations. Classes are held on a scheduled Saturday, and students are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

    An intervention program for students who violate certain policies related to discipline and violence. Students are referred by local administrator or Student Relations. Classes are held on a scheduled Saturday, and students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

A Systemwide Voluntary Substance Abuse Intervention Parent/Student Interactional Saturday Program For Secondary Schools

GRIP is a substance abuse intervention program offered to middle and high schools. It is an optional program offered to parents and students who have violated certain rules and/or policies.

Gaining Results In Prevention (GRIP) is offered on Saturday in lieu of some evidentiary hearings (or even some local formal hearings). It gives parents and students an option following a local school hearing to reduce the suspension by attending and completing a scheduled session. The GRIP program is a skill-based program which encompasses many areas of students’ and parents’ lives.

To improve student achievement, discipline, and attendance and to reduce substance abuse in DeKalb County Schools by providing an optional after-school substance abuse intervention program to parents and their children who have violated certain rules and/or policies.
  • improve student performance in school
  • identify the type of support their child needs
  • communicate more effectively with their child
  • serve as a strategy and/or positive consequence for student’s unacceptable behavior
The GRIP program gives students and their parents an opportunity to share in drug education awareness and to discuss the consequences of substance abuse and the effect it has on the individual, the family, and the community. Students and parents will be able to:
  • identify the negative effects drugs and alcohol have on the community
  • recognize the effects of role-modeling positive behavior
  • share information with others on the social ills of drug and alcohol use
The GRIP Program gives students an opportunity to:
  • improve school performance
  • become more knowledgeable about substance abuse, long-term physical effects, legal ramifications, and the effects of drug use on self and family
  • develop a deeper understanding of consequences for behavior
  • improve relationships between students and parents
  • learn solutions to coping with peer pressure that do not involve drugs and alcohol
  • improve communication skills
  • improve student achievement
  • improve student/teacher relationships
  • decrease/eliminate the use of alcohol and drugs
  • decrease risky behavior associated with substance use (i.e., sex and violent behavior)
  • increase in self-confidence
  • increase positive communication between students and parents

POINTS is a systemwide, voluntary violence intervention parent/student interactional saturday program for secondary schools. The goal is to improve student achievement, discipline, and attendance and to reduce violence in DeKalb County Schools by providing an optional after-school violence intervention program to parents and their children who have violated certain rules and/or policies.
